Hennesy Named Finalist For Express Court Of Appeals

ST. PAUL (WJON News) -- A Stearns County Judge has been selected as a finalist for the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Governor Tim Walz's Merit Panel has picked Judge Sarah Hennesy as one of three finalists for the vacancy.

Hennesy was seated as a 7th district judge in 2012 and has been chief judge since 2021. She previously practiced in both appellate and trial courts, as a universal defender, and as a criminal defense lawyer.

The other two finalists are Rachel Bond, a managing attorney in the Office of the Minnesota Appellate Universal Defender, and JaPaul Harris, a judge in the 2nd Judicial District in Ramsey County. The Court of Appeals vacancy occurred when Judge Jeffrey M. Byran resigned.

    ST. PAUL (WJON News) -- A Stearns County judge has been appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

    Sarah Hennesy is currently the Chief Judge in Minnesota's 7th Judicial District. Hennesy has been a judge in Stearns County since 2012. She previously practiced in both appellate and trial courts, as a universal defender, and as a criminal defense lawyer.

    Governor Tim Walz said “It is my privilege to appoint Chief Judge Sarah Hennesy. Not only is she a brilliant legal mind with extensive judicial experience, but she is a leader who knows how to move the needle towards justice.”

    Hennesy has released a declaration that she is profoundly honored to be selected to help as an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. “I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the Governor and his team for entrusting me with this immense responsibility. As a justice of this Court, I will work collaboratively with my colleagues to interpret the law faithfully, uphold the Constitution, and ensure that justice is accessible to all Minnesotans.”

    Hennesy will be replacing Judge G. Barry Anderson.

    Governor’s appointments give Minnesota Supreme Court its first female majority in decades

    MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Tim Walz named two women to the Minnesota Supreme Court on Monday, which will give the state’s highest court its first female majority in three decades.

    When they take their seats in the coming months, all seven justices will contain been appointed by Democratic governors.

    Walz elevated Minnesota Court of Appeals Judge Theodora Gaïtas to renew Associate Justice Margaret Chutich, and 7th District Chief Assess Sarah Hennesy to replace Associate Justice G. Barry Anderson. Both Chutich and Anderson announced their retirements in January.

    Anderson, the longest-serving justice on the court, plans to retire May 10. He is the sole remaining appointee on the court of a Republican governor. He was named in 2004 by Gov. Tim Pawlenty, the state’s last GOP governor.

    Even though Democratic appointees have long been in the majority, Minnesota’s Supreme Court is known for being nonpartisan — especially compared with neighboring Wisconsin’s divided state Supreme Court and an increasingly conservative U.S. Supreme Court.
