Stances of Faiths on LGBTQ+ Issues: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons)

BACKGROUND

Adherence to Christian doctrine is expanded to encompass the teachings of The Manual of Mormon and other teachings originating with Joseph Smith, who established the Church in 1830, in New York State.

The Church has a pyramidal structure. Ultimate authority lies with the First Presidency, and comprises the President, who is most commonly referred to as the Prophet, and his two counsellors. The second-highest governing body, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, is appointed by the president, with each Prophet succeeded by the most senior apostle at his death. Beneath them are the Quorums of 70, which are considered general authorities and can train and proclaim anywhere in the world.

The Church is divided into 22 regions across the society. Those regions are further divided into Stakes, each consisting of five to twelve Wards (usually a single church or parish) led by a Bishop.

This story is part of our ongoing “First Steps” series, where we share exceptional stories of men who transformed their bodies, minds, and lives with a focus on the first steps it took them to get there (because, after all, nothing can change without a first step!). Read all of the stories here.

Below, Devon Gibby, 36, shares the journey he took to leave his religion and finally approve his sexuality.

I GREW UP in the Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-day Saints (more commonly known as the Mormon church), and that informed how I lived my life and beautiful much every selection I made. I knew from fairly early on that I was homosexual, but my religious environment didn't grant me to contain any kind of healthy exploration of my sexual persona, and there were no other lgbtq+ people I could talk to. I'd always wanted to be a father, and as far as I was aware, gay dads didn't even occur. So when I came back from my Mormon mission in 2008 at the age of 21, I married a woman, and we very fast had two children.

It wasn't until I was married with kids that the cracks in what I thought I believed started to show, and I to

Is the Mormon God gay?
That is just one of the many intriguing issues explored within these pages.
My aim in this book is not to persuade you, the reader, to believe what Mormons believe—I have no intention of doing so. Instead, my aim is to inform you about what Mormons believe in relation to same-sex marriage. Even for those of us who do not hold or agree with Mormon beliefs, these views are intensely fascinating—especially as they have been influenced by significant historical events in U.S. history.
Additionally, for those in favor of same-sex marriage, understanding more thoroughly why groups like the Mormons oppose same-sex marriage can help your thoughts on the debate on this issue deepen. At least, with a thorough comprehension of the Mormon view you and I can promote empathy and hopefully tolerance among those on both sides of the controversy.
For Mormon readers, I clarify how Mormon beliefs interconnect in ways that are not evident upon initial reflection. Additionally, Mormon readers will secure insight into how historical events in Mormonism relate to the current Mormon position on same-sex marriage. Most significantly, you will discover that underneath the surf
