Here Are the Juvenile Men brings together a stellar cast jammed full of television mainstays already comfortable with fleshing out characters of their own. These include Animal Kingdom’s Finn Cole, Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman, The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy, and Viking’s Ferdia Walsh-Peelo and Travis Fimmel. All hand over performances worthy of a bit more definition to the script. The story is exciting and interesting, but something extra is missing in execution. If I had to guess, I’d speak that being based on a novel by Rob Doyle, the team likely had to chop several key sequences or explanations that could’ve fixed a few areas where the film falters. It’s very doable as well that the issues could fall to the original source material. No matter how you slice it, Here Are the Young Men is a good production, but I wanted a great one, particularly reliant on the strength of that cast alone.

The film won Leading Drama at the Golden Globes, Superb British Film and Best Film at the BAFTAs and… well let’s just say I’m content I waited until after the Oscars to write this article. Regardless, this WWI film wowed audiences with its teeth-grinding tension and “HOW DID THEY DO THAT?!” one-shot cinematography.

But you realize what would possess made it better? If it were gayer.

I’m probably going to have to justify that. Spoilers ahead.

The core partnership of the motion picture is between the two protagonists, Lance Corporals Blake and Schofield. Through their perilous mission across the war-torn fields of France, they display openness and intimacy rare from male leads in action films. The single-take aesthetic heavily emphasises their closeness, almost always placing them together in the frame. Their bantering dialogue makes them feel favor they’ve been seal friends for years. They need each other, they retain each other.
