Abstract
Deering Oaks was the lgbtq+ cruising spot in Portland until 1990, when police stepped up enforcement of various city laws and drove many potential cruisers into the nearby Western Promenade area. The Portland Municipality Council in March approved a new anti-cruising ordinance that calls for no-cruising signs in designated areas and fines of up to $500 for a third offense. Bruce Balboni, editor at the Group Pride Reporter, says the assault on gay cruising is part of a cultural war, and that Deering Oaks should be reopened to gay cruising. Details.
